Just Joking: Writing Prompt #343

I’m sure we’ve all been in a situation where someone makes a comment, and when we react negatively, they say they were just joking. Recently, someone I know spent a good long time ranting about a co-worker. She ended her rant by saying her co-worker behaved that way because she is Irish. Excuse me!?! WTF? Don’t ever tell me someone behaves a certain way because of an ethnic background. Ever. I called her on it. Instead, of apologizing, she is now telling others that I don’t get her sense of humour.

So for today’s prompt, write a scene where one character makes a comment that can be or is taken the wrong way (or possibly the way it was actually intended). What kind of conflicts arise from that statement? Think of twists and miscommunication that could be added. Is the relationship between the two (or more) people important to your story? How would a misunderstanding influence that relationship? How would it change future scenes? Are there clues you can imbed in this scene that could be played out later in your story?
