Writing Prompt #285

If you do any kind of writing (and that’s why you’re here, right), you need to think about world building. Or at least the world your characters live in. Anything contemporary is set in our world, so you know things like political structure, religions, societal norms. But what about fantasy? Science fiction? Urban fantasy? What kind of world do your characters live in? Is the political structure similar to ours? What kind of climate exists? Does this affect trade? If so, how? Is there magic? Is it known? Hidden? What happens if it is hidden and your character has magical abilities?

The questions to ask are endless. If you do a google search for “world building checklist”, you can find a number of sites (such as the SFWA list written by Patricia C. Wrede) with great questions to consider regarding politics, government, land and its uses and more.

I’m off to make a list for the next writing idea I have in mind. So I can get it out of my mind and on to paper.
