Writing Prompt #159

In my younger years, I did a lot of knitting. I had pattern books, yarn, an entire boxed set of needles. But knitting put me to sleep. Literally. I equated the absolute zen state I achieved while knitting with boredom and decided I must hate knitting. So I gave it up. About a year ago, I moved my sewing room. During the re-organization, I threw out all my knitting magazines.

This year, a co-worker started to talk about the socks she knit. Constantly. Every time she came in to work, she talked about her project. Ooh, yarn. See, I love yarn. So I started knitting again. Now, I wish I hadn’t thrown out all those pattern books.

That got me thinking. What if your main character discarded an item thinking it no longer served a purpose and now needs it? What might that thing be? Is it something large? Important? Will it alter the course of your story? Poor Bilbo, threw out the ring, and now the Middle Earth has gone to hell in the proverbial basket. Shakes head. Sorry, wrong story.
