Why Editing Is Important

I read the following headline in the Globe and Mail:

Slain officer grew up to love hunting and hockey in Canada after overcoming tragedy in Vietnam.

Wow, that is confusing. I think the paper tried to cram too much info into a headline. When I read it, I thought the guy managed to die before he grew up–a great trick if you write paranormal stories, but not so great if you write a newspaper headline. Re-writing the sentence to clarify things makes it too long for a headline.

Maybe they should have used their tag line: ‘Brave’ officer gunned down. Of course those air-quotes only make them sound like they doubt his bravery…
