Writing Prompt #32

One of the most important things in a story is the inciting incident. In my present WIP, I had to delete a fairly main character before I could figure out what that might be. The incident I had written didn’t relate to the last half of the book. Once I deleted the character, another scene became so obvious as the inciting incident.

For today, think about how you would define an inciting incident. Does it occur in the past–ooh, dreaded back story? Does it occur in the first sentence? Do you work up to it? Now write a scene showing us the inciting incident for your character.
