Has anyone else noticed we no longer say “pardon me”. When I was growing up it was already on the way out, replaced with the short uncouth “what?” Now, the word is “sorry”. So exactly what does that mean? “Sorry I didn’t hear what you said”, or more truthfully: “Sorry, I wasn’t listening to you.”

Yup, politeness is on the decline, as I recently observed at http://thorts.wordpress.com.
Actually “yer waar” more than “What?”

Ooh, and what exactly does “yer waar” mean in English anyway. Guess it’s better than “sorry”. Or maybe not. At least sorry is still English–just impolite.
